Minister welcomes supermarket support for WA pork industry.

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today welcomed Woolworth’s supermarkets’ support of the Western Australian pig industry by launching a new WA product to be distributed nationally.

Mr Redman said the launch of the new honey ham off the bone, processed by longstanding small goods company D’Orsogna, would see WA ham available at Woolworth’s stores throughout WA and across the country.
“Many of the pork smallgoods produced in Australia use imported pork so it is very pleasing to see a product on the market which is made from pork produced in WA,” he said.
“There is obviously a consumer driven demand for local product and this is a great example of retailers and processors working together to support our local producers.
“Customers in WA will be able to identify the product which is carrying the State’s ‘buy west eat best’ logo.

“This is good news for our WA pork producers and good news for WA consumers who can have confidence in the quality of the product.
“The ‘buy west, eat best’ initiative is a great way for WA growers, processors and retailers to promote safe, quality WA food products, backed by quality assurance programs and protocols.
“The distinctive green WA-shaped logo can be applied to both fresh and processed products, so long as the main ingredient is produced in WA.”
Woolworths and D’Orsogna are two of 79 businesses currently registered with the campaign, which includes producers, processors and retailers across the dairy, horticulture, grains, meat and fish industries.
“Some of the State’s most innovative companies that produce well-known products are registered with ‘buy west, eat best’, which is testimony to the importance of the brand and the value of its marketability,” the Minister said.
“I am sure this new pork product will prove to be another successful food produced in WA.”
