New cookbook has a WA flavour

Budding masterchefs will have the chance to add a Western Australian flavour to their cooking thanks to a new cookbook featuring recipes using WA food products.

Launched today by Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman at the Perth Royal Show, the new Buy West Eat Best cookbook features 80 recipes which all use at least one product carrying the Buy West Eat Best logo.

Mr Redman said the development of the 208-page cookbook had been funded by 23 industry members of the Buy West Eat Best program.  Profits from the sale of the book will be reinvested in future Buy West Eat Best marketing activities.

“The cookbook includes many exciting and innovative recipes compiled by WA chef Paul Zammit,” he said.

“These include son-in-law eggs made with Golden eggs; poor man’s potatoes using Ruby Lou or Royal Blue potatoes; and sweet banana and beetroot ravioli cooked with Carnarvon Sweeter Bananas.”

The Minister said the Buy West East Best program had been running for nearly three years and had almost 100 WA businesses registered, ranging from fruit and vegetables growers, cheese makers, bakeries and egg producers.

“The program, managed by the Department of Agriculture and Food, has been very successful in raising the profile of the WA food industry through marketing activities like the recent ‘Be vocal about eating local’ television advertising campaign,” he said.

Mr Redman said the program was also important for consumers, who could be confident a food product carrying the green Buy West Eat Best logo had been grown, farmed, fished or produced in WA.

The Buy West Eat Best cookbook will be available from Coles and Woolworths at a cost of $34.95.

There will be daily cooking demonstrations during the Perth Royal Show in the IGA Fresh Pavilion using recipes from the cookbook from 10am to noon.
