Cambinata Yabbies

Family-owned Cambinata Yabbies operates the largest yabby export facility in Australia, growing the beloved freshwater crayfish for the local and overseas market.

It was started in 1991 by Mary and Michael Nenke, who ran a wheat and sheep farm near the tiny Wheatbelt town of Kukerin.

Michael had long been catching yabbies as a hobby but when a friend called trying to source the delicious crustaceans for a Perth restaurant, they decided to turn that hobby into a business.

The yabbies are sourced from hundreds of farmers across the Wheatbelt and Great Southern, and are then purged in biologically filtered freshwater tanks before being individually weighed and sorted. They are transferred to a large, chilled holding tank ready for packing and shipping across Australia and the world. Consumers can also order direct for delivery to their home.

The yabbies are also value-added in a commercial kitchen and sold domestically as gourmet pickled yabbies; as well as served at functions in the adjoining rustic shearing shed and at the family’s eco-friendly farm village, Mary’s Farm Cottages.

Visitors can stay at Mary’s Farm Cottages, camp on the Cambinata farm, or book into other local accommodation such as Kukerin Caravan Park.
